“You are a manipulative bastard.”

Jessica tried to infuse as much derision as possible with her accusation, before bursting into tears.

“I like to think of myself as an outcome engineer.” He smirked from the corner of his lip.

Jessica’s body trembled. Her eyes started to turn glossy as tears dived from them straight into her cheeks. Dark trails of eyeliner followed them. Her hands ventured to her rescue, to prevent him the satisfaction of seeing her more open, vulnerable.

Jensen held her by the golden chain belt that encircled her waist with his right hand. And pulled her closer.

“Stop it!”

“Very good Jess.” He said as his grip lessened, the gap between them widened.

“I hate you!”

“I know.”

She hated herself more for not meaning it, because it would have been so much easier to walk away with all the money. It would have been so much easier. But the manipulative bastard was right. The world didn’t belong to the cautious and weak.

“How did you know I wasn’t gonna shoot you?”

“Because the first time I kissed you, you sucked my upper lip.”

That didn’t make sense to her. What had a kiss—ten years ago—had revealed about her? After all that was the first and last time they were with each other. She could have changed so much. In fact, she did.

“Tell me the truth,” she warned him, “I still have all the bullets in my gun.”

“That is the true truth, I swear it on...”

“Don’t say it, don’t you dare say it!” Her tears turned hot on her eyes, everything became blurred.

Her gun went off.

Jensen didn’t even blink.

“Were you anticipating that as well? You, know-it-all bastard.”

“Yes,” he grinned. “That’s why I put blanks on your gun.”

Jessica slapped him with the back of her left hand. He only turned his face, unruffled.

The realisation came to her abruptly, “when did you change my bullets?” They didn’t have any interaction before the game.

“That is my secret, after all, I am an outcome engineer.”

Sirens went off in the far distance.

Jensen bent slowly, grabbed his bag with the money, and started to walk.

Jessica couldn’t stop thinking, her mind was raving in all directions, filled with questions. Why her? Why after all these years? Was he going to vanish like he did right after high school?

She followed him. Her head was against the idea, her heart was confused, her legs tried to keep up. He didn’t turn around to check if she was coming along with the bag that had all the jewels.

In a dark alley, there was a black Bugatti Veyron, she could hardly see it, but she was sure about the kind of vehicle, because the city was wallpapered with ads of the new car.

It just entered into the market, and Jensen already had one for the getaway. She thought to herself.

He shoved the bag behind the passenger sit and opened the door for her.

Jessica’s heart was racing inside her chest. The night had been thrilling. She needed that to help her get away from her otherwise monotonous life as a school teacher.

“How did you get this car?” She enquired.

“An old friend of mine has a dealership contract with the company, he had the car just sitting there gathering dust, and I had something that he wanted badly. It was a fair exchange.”

The car started, she could feel the vibrations of the engine in her upper palate. A rather pleasurable feeling invaded her body as she closed her eyes.

“We’ll be spending the night at the docks.” He said without asking her opinion.

She could tell that he planned this for a long time. Everything clicked like clockwork magic.

They took the coastline to the south. She put the gun in her purse.

Jensen parked inside pier twenty three, the entire area was clear.

“I hope you don't mind spending the night inside the car.” His face was serene, his voice calm.

“Tell me for how long you have been planning this.” She felt her emotions towards him change. Just a few hours ago she was about to shoot him on the table, and now she felt like finalising their unfinished business after their first kiss that night, which didn’t seem that long ago.

They were young and stupid back then. But, that didn’t mean she didn’t want him.

Surely enough, their parents would have tried to separate them, because of their religious beliefs.

If she couldn’t ask why he left, she at least had to know something else.

“What did you do all this time?”

His glim of arrogance had faded somewhat, but with her question, his jaw locked firmly for a moment.

“I had so many odd jobs, but in the end I understood that money is not for those who work hard, it belongs to those who are brave enough to take it.”

That was that same speech he delivered at the table. The part about taking something with courage.

“Did a business go wrong?”

The only thing he did was to let go of a long sigh, and she knew that the gesture meant so much to him to be put into words.

“Where did you go?”

His face lighted with joy once again.

“I travelled to so many places, I wish you could have seen some of them with me.”

They had talked about travelling together to Greece, that night of their first kiss, about walking together through the Parthenon.

“Tell me more.” She requested.

“You would have loved the ruins.” His gaze, lost in the distant, dark sky. “Also the sea, the beauty of its blue, the contrast with the white clouds and the sun reflected in its waters.”

She felt so happy that he had come back for her. Now they would be able to see that together.

“Let’s get some sleep,” he suggested, “tomorrow we have to sail.” His eyelids closed, “the ship is already on its way, it will land here at first light. I call her ‘Sweet Jess’.”

It had been an intense night, she fell asleep holding his hand.

With the first light Jessica woke up. His hand was cold. A patch of dried blood covered his entire leg. She looked at her gun. The remaining bullets were no blanks.
